Why The Schwartz Scene?

I started the The Schwartz Scene blog and newsletter while writing my book, the first authorized career biography of Stephen Schwartz. Read about Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked.

I was initially inspired to develop The Schwartz Scene quarterly newsletter/e-zine after seeing The Sondheim Review, a quarterly print magazine dedicated to the work of Stephen Sondheim. My own interest was in the creative output of another musical maker named Stephen. Long before Wicked showed up on Broadway, Stephen Schwartz’s shows Godspell, Children of Eden, and others had been favorites of mine.

Mr. Schwartz agreed to contribute updates to my newsletter, as his time allowed. Since the fall of 2000, I have been covering the Schwartz beat through The Schwartz Scene newsletter, my independent website www.MusicalSchwartz.com, and now this blog.
