Gregory Maguire: New Novel and Comment for “Defying Gravity”

Wicked, Stephen Schwartz, Gregory Maguire Add comments

Carol de Giere and Gregory Maguire

Novelist Gregory Maguire has done it again. He has used his inventive genius to develop a new entry into the fantasy world of Oz, this time through the perspective of the Lion.

I met Gregory while working on my book Defying Gravity: Defying Gravity: the Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked. I featured several of Gregory’s comments and photos in the book. For example, he provided a delightful story of what happened when he and Stephen Schwartz met about the rights for converting his novel into a musical.

I was fortunate to receive an endorsement from Gregory for the back cover of my book Defying Gravity:

“A wonderful read. And the Wicked section provides a comprehensive account of a thoroughly recondite and even mysterious event: the gestation and birth of a phenomenon.”–Gregory Maguire

Gregory’s and my book tours almost intersect in NYC. His New York City event at Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center is October 23rd, and mine is October 30th. He and I are planning something together in Boston later on but don’t have it organized just yet. My tour info (as currently developed) is at www.defyinggravitythebook.com - Events

ABOUT A LION AMONG MEN

From the publicity: “Since Wicked was first published in 1995, millions of readers have discovered Gregory Maguire’s fantastically encyclopedic Oz, a world filled with characters both familiar and new, darkly conceived and daringly reimagined. In the much-anticipated third volume of the Wicked Years, we return to Oz, seen now through the eyes of the Cowardly Lion—the once tiny cub defended by Elphaba in Wicked.”
